Bird Advent Calendar
vintage ornaments
Last week at the Feed n’ Seed store there was a little antique holiday sale section off in the corner and right away I recognized a bunch of old fashioned ornaments for sale – just like the kind my Oma has – the vintage ones in metallic blue, pink and yellow with stencilled flocking. Oma also had a collection of those glittery cardboard Christmas village houses with the cellophane windows that the lights shine through. So when I saw the vintage ornaments and houses at the Feed n’ Seed I had to get them. I made a wintery forrest out of sticks behind the houses in honor of the skeleton trees in Minnesota. I think I might add some crows flying in the sky above them too so that it’s even spookier.

end of fall
We made our last trip to the leaf dump over the weekend. Fall feels over. I hope I don’t have to wait too much longer for some snow…

2012 Wall Calendar
The calendars are all finished. Each one was printed with a Gocco printer (my favorite printing technique) which is similar to a mix between a silkscreen and a stamp. The Gocco is small, pretty easy to use, and if you are lucky you can get around 50 prints made without having to re-ink.
The illustrations for these calendars were inspired by the seasons in Minnesota.
They are for sale on ETSY.

Halloween Ride
Matt figured out how to secure that jack-o-lantern to the back of my bike! The top popped off a few times but the pumpkin managed to stay on the whole ride.

Halloween Weekend
The Birds has been one of my favorite movies for years, but before moving to Rochester I’d never experienced any real life spooky/Hitchcock bird moments…and since moving I’ve been dive bombed by black birds twice, and there are many months during nesting season where my nice relaxing runs on the path turn into potential attach zones – where there’s a black bird perched on every lampost & tree limb, and I have to be sure and keep my eye on them all so I’m ready to defend myself. Then there’s the crows. Every winter thousands of crows come back to Rochester, and in the sky around dusk there’s a good chance of crows in all directions as far as you can see. The sight and sound of them all gathered at night in the tree tops or roof tops is very spooky, but if you are lucky you’ll get to see them take over one of the playgrounds. Matt and I think the crows are one of Rochester’s best features.

I had lots of fun arranging the black birds and crows on my outfit. Most people seemed to think I was just Being-Attacked-By-Birds and only 2 people I talked to had seen the movie, but that’s ok, it was really fun to dress up. Matt talked about making an Oh Brother Where Art Thou costume, but doesn’t have as much Goodwill patience as I do, and went to his fall back cowboy costume – always a fun one too.

And the weekend ended with pumpkin carving.
